How To Boost Your Communication Skills

When it comes to having a job, communication doesn’t just cover discussing office gossip around the water cooler. Communication happens in meetings, presentations, emails and more so if you’re not a chatterbox it can be difficult to avoid. Going out of your way to say as little as possible and just quietly get on isn’t the right course of action to take however, learning how to boost your communication skills is!

 

‘Let me hear your body talk’

One of the biggest ways to boost your communication skills doesn’t actually involve any talking at all. The majority of communication that you make with others is non-verbal and this can tell a lot about a person.

The basics of non-verbal communication include: Having a good posture by standing up straight with your shoulders back – this will make you appear confident, maintaining eye contact and not doing everything in your power to avoid their gaze and not folding your arms – this will make you seem defensive and unapproachable.

Now it’s onto verbal communication and the importance of not being stubborn and defensive. If you build a wall around your opinions and refuse to budge about anything people will be less likely to want to talk to you and may find you difficult to deal with. Go into conversations with a more fluid approach and be open to new ideas that you may not have considered.

 

The lights are on but nobodies home

One very important way how to boost your communication skills is to actually pay attention to what others are saying when they talk to you. If information is going in one ear and out the other not only is this extremely rude and they will be unimpressed and annoyed if they realise what’s going on, but you’re likely to miss out on something of value. It could be a new idea, a helpful suggestion on how to solve a problem you have or just praise for something you’ve done, but you’ll never know until you listen.

If you do have to give a presentation be sure to ask for feedback, either at the end if there is an opportunity or privately from any senior staff that were included in the audience. Getting honest feedback from others that isn’t sugar-coated can be very useful in learning how you can boost your communication skills and also shows others that you are open to constructive criticism and keen to improve.

 

Conquer your fears before they conquer you

This one might seem more fear-factor than feasible for those who hate to mingle, but making the most of networking opportunities is an excellent way to boost your communication skills. You’ll meet new people with new viewpoints and opinions and you may see people you’re more familiar with to make the experience easier and have a safety net of conversation to turn to if it gets a bit much. You’ll be able to judge your progress if you can go from pressing yourself against the wall and downing dutch courage to chatting away with ease and as well as building up your skills you may just build some useful relationships as well!
