Like the saying goes, it takes years to build a reputation and seconds to destroy it. It can be difficult finding the right balance for how you act at work. You want to seem friendly, relaxed and not like an avoidable extra from The Walking Dead hanging about by the water cooler devoid of a sense of humour, a pulse, or even skin. However, acting so relaxed you’re almost horizontal will get on a lot of people’s nerves and only lead you into trouble and the boss’s office. If your idea of work attire has you dressing like The Dude complete with wild unkempt hair then simply put you have to get your act together. And no, that’s not just like our opinion man. Dressing properly even if your job doesn’t have a set dress code is important because it will put you in the right frame of mind for work. It will also benefit you if you ever meet someone unexpectedly that could be a helpful member of your networking circle for future jobs.

You don’t need to turn up in a full suit and tie every day unless your job is very specific about this, but opting for a smart-casual look leaning more towards smart is the safest bet.


Practically perfect in every way

While we understand that everyone ideally wants to come across like the perfect employee, trying too hard can actually do more harm than good. Everyone has memories of the one person at school that consistently excelled in every area and everyone else quietly wanted to punch in the face. It’s the same principle here. Trying to maintain this image of never needing assistance can not only land you in hot-water if you fail to deliver the goods, but it’s also bad for your mental health to think you can’t ask for help when you need it.

Working well on an individual basis and also being a beneficial member of a team that can share ideas and knowledge makes you a stronger employee not a weaker one and will show everyone that you’re open to discussion and advice.


The invisible man

Imagine the situation, the photocopier is broken because someone encouraged it to work by pressing a few too many buttons at once and now it has frozen and no one else can use it. If the culprit slipped into the shadows and wouldn’t say anything, the chances are everyone else would be pretty annoyed as they don’t know what happened and how they can fix it. Not owning up to your mistakes and accepting responsibility is one of the worst ways to lose credibility at work.

Even worse is if you know you’ve done something wrong and you try to shift the blame onto someone else. You will get found out and by that point the damage is done and everyone will see you as shifty and untrustworthy. Everyone makes mistakes so don’t be afraid to admit to them.

Dory may have been nice when she said this to Marlin, but chances are no one in your office will be that friendly if there are practically storm-clouds rumbling over your head. Most people don’t like Monday’s and not everyone is enamoured with their job, but that doesn’t mean you can snap at people asking for your help or just be a misery to deal with. It’s understandable to have the occasional bad day, but when it’s reoccurring then you might encounter problems.

Not only will you bring everyone else’s mood down with yours, but you’ll be less likely to have an effective day at work if you are in a bad frame of mind. Try making sure you sleep well throughout the week if it’s tiredness that’s giving you a bad temper, you’ll feel much brighter if you have 8 hours of rest behind you.


Don’t make promises you won’t keep

Another of the worst ways to lose credibility at work is by being that person who says they will do something and never does. There’s not many more annoying things than needing help and being let down at the last minute – this leads to resentment and a lack of trust. Not only have you let down one person, but chances are the word will spread like wildfire and the next time you need help you won’t get it as you won’t deserve it.

If the problem with keeping promises lies in being disorganised, make an effort to change, put a date in your calendar, set alarms or even place post it notes somewhere you will consistently see them to remind you that you have something to do for someone else.
